Prophet Adam’s Du’a

Prophet Adam (peace be upon him)

Everyone experiences tests in their life. Our beloved Prophets (peace be upon them all) were not exempt from trials either.

Sa’d ibn Abi Waqqas said:

‘O Messenger of Allah, which people are most severely tested?’ He said: ‘The Prophets, then the next best and the next best. A person is tested according to his religious commitment. If he is steadfast in his religious commitment, he will be tested more severely, and if he is frail in his religious commitment, his test will be according to his commitment. Trials will continue to afflict a person until they leave him walking on the earth with no sin on him.’

In this blog, we will be looking at the supplication made by the Prophet Adam, peace be upon him, which are mentioned in the Qur’an, and how to overcame trials by turning to Allah in du’a.

But before we begin, did you know that Allah encourages us to make du’a to Him and promises a response? Allah says:

ٱدْعُونِىٓ أَسْتَجِبْ لَكُمْ ۚ

Call upon Me; I will respond to you

Whenever we make du’a we should be confident that Allah has heard us and have full conviction that He will give us what is best for us.

The first supplication we will cover is the du’a of the first human being Allah created – Prophet Adam (peace be upon him). His du’a is mentioned in Surah Al A’raaf, Verse 23:

رَبَّنَا ظَلَمْنَآ أَنفُسَنَا وَإِن لَّمْ تَغْفِرْ لَنَا وَتَرْحَمْنَا لَنَكُونَنَّ مِنَ ٱلْخَـٰسِرِينَ

“Our Lord, we have wronged ourselves, and if You do not forgive us and have mercy upon us, we will surely be among the losers.”

Adam and Hawaa (Eve) both made this supplication after the devil deceived them into eating from a specific tree in Paradise, which Allah had instructed them to not go near.

Allah, out of His Mercy, taught Adam (peace be upon him) this du’a and by extension, taught us how to repent to Allah after we fall into sin. By admitting to Allah alone that we fell into the sin and asking Him to forgive us.  Among the virtues of asking Allah to forgive us is that He will increase us in our provision, bestow His mercy on us, and help us find solutions for our problems. Most of all, He loves when we turn back to Him.

Allah mentions in the Qur’an, in Surah Nuh, Chapter 71, Verses 10 to 12:

“And I said, ‘Ask forgiveness of your Lord. Indeed, He is ever a Perpetual Forgiver. He will send [rain from] the sky upon you in [continuing] showers, And give you increase in wealth and children and provide for you gardens and provide for you rivers.”

Abdullah Ibn ‘Abbas (May Allah be pleased with him) said:

The Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) said, “If anyone constantly seeks pardon (from Allah), Allah will appoint for him a way out of every distress and a relief from every anxiety, and will provide sustenance for him from where he expects not.”

Allah taught Prophet Adam (peace be upon him) a very comprehensive du’a, the essence of which is seeking the forgiveness of Allah, which in turn allows us to become closer to Allah, receive provision from Allah, and additionally brings ease and tranquillity into our lives.

Through this test that Prophet Adam (peace be upon him) faced, we are now able to make the same du’a that Allah taught him so we can also seek the forgiveness of Allah and be successful in this world and next, إن شاء الله
