Recognized as one of the four sacred months in the Quran, Muharram offers a unique opportunity for Muslims around the world to reflect on the lessons of history.
Muharram: A Sacred Time
Allah has designated Muharram as one of the sacred months, a time when warfare and violence are forbidden. Allah says in the Quran:
Indeed, the number of months with Allah is twelve [lunar] months in the register of Allah [from] the day He created the heavens and the earth; of these, four are sacred… (Quran 9:36).
This designation underscores a period of peace and contemplation, where acts of aggression are strictly forbidden. The sanctity of Muharram serves as a reminder for Muslims to practise patience and piety, focusing on personal growth and enlightenment.
The Islamic New Year
The arrival of Muharram also marks the beginning of the Islamic lunar calendar year. This transition is not just a passage of time—it commemorates the Hijra of Prophet Muhammad from Mecca to Medina. This pivotal event laid the foundation for the establishment of the first Muslim community based on Islamic principles of justice, compassion, and faith. The Islamic New Year is thus a time for Muslims to reflect and to set goals for the year ahead.
Day of Ashura
The 10th day of Muharram, known as Ashura, holds a special place in the hearts of Muslims. It is a day rooted in profound historical events that reflect the enduring human soul against adversity. Ashura is a day of fasting, commemorating the day Allah saved Moses and the Israelites from Pharaoh’s tyranny. The Prophet Muhammad said, “Fasting the day of ‘Ashura’, I hope, will expiate for the sins of the preceding year.” (Sahih Muslim). This fast is a tribute to victory and deliverance, reinforcing themes of reliance on Allah during times of difficulty.
Renew and Reflect
As we step into Muharram, let us embrace this sacred month as a time to renew our Emaan, fast with intention, and reflect on the profound lessons of our rich Islamic history. This is a time to gather strength from our past, cultivate gratitude for our present, and foster hope for our future.
