Introduction
The choice of a spouse is one of life’s most critical decisions. In Islam, this choice is not left to whims or superficial factors but guided by principles that prioritize faith, character, and long-term compatibility.
Choosing a Husband
The Prophet Muhammad (ﷺ) advised:
“If someone comes to you whose religion and character please you, then marry him.”
Two qualities are essential:
- Deen (Religious Commitment): A husband with strong faith will fulfill his responsibilities to his family and treat his wife with kindness and patience.
- Character: Good character ensures a husband is compassionate, responsible, and respectful.
Choosing a Wife
The Prophet (ﷺ) said:
“A woman is married for four reasons: her wealth, her lineage, her beauty, and her religion. So marry the one with religion, may your hands be rubbed with dust (i.e., may you prosper).”
- Deen: A wife with faith will uphold her family’s best interests, even in her husband’s absence.
- Beauty: While subjective, physical attraction is important but should not overshadow other qualities.
- Lineage: A woman’s family and upbringing influence her values and parenting.
- Wealth: While wealth is a consideration, it should support the family, not define the relationship.
Conclusion
A successful marriage starts with the right partner. By prioritizing Deen and character, Muslims can build a home rooted in mutual respect and shared values, ensuring success in both this life and the Hereafter.
